Track to Progress: The ₹871 Crore Rail Upgrade

The Central government has approved the construction of a fourth rail line between Asangaon and Kasara, a key step in enhancing the Mumbai–Nashik rail corridor.

The new line is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3B package, with an estimated cost of ₹871 crore to be shared equally between the Centre and the state government. Central Railway officials said the fourth line will help decongest the route by creating dedicated corridors for suburban locals, mail, express, and freight trains, enabling more local services and smoother long-distance operations.

The project spans a 35-km stretch, with construction already underway on the Kalyan–Asangaon section and land acquisition in progress for the Asangaon–Kasara segment. The expansion is expected to improve operational efficiency and significantly enhance the suburban rail network in the region.
