The National Highways Wing of the State Highways Department has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to undertake a significant expansion project on the L&T Bypass Road in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The plan aims to transform the current narrow two-lane road into a six-lane thoroughfare spanning from Neelambur to Madukkarai, covering a distance of 27.2 kilometers.
This proposal follows a surge in fatal accidents along the stretch, resulting in the tragic loss of 120 lives last year. In response to this alarming statistic, the NH Wing has taken proactive steps to address safety concerns and improve road infrastructure.
Having already acquired a width of 45 meters of land along the entire 27.2-kilometer stretch, the proposal seeks to enhance both safety and efficiency for commuters. This road serves as a crucial route for travelers heading to Bengaluru or Chennai from Kerala, as well as for trucks transporting goods to Kerala, Chennai, or Bengaluru.
It's worth noting that L&T Group has been responsible for maintaining the Neelambur-Madukkarai stretch under an agreement with MoRTH since 1999, with the agreement set to continue until 2029.
