Veermalakunnu: A New Urban Forest Blooms in Kasaragod

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has approved an urban forest project at Veermalakunnu in Kasaragod, Kerala, spanning 38 hectares, with the goal of enhancing eco-tourism and preserving the region’s rich biodiversity.

The project will be implemented in two phases: nine acres will be developed by the Tourism Department under the Kasaragod Development Package, while 14 hectares will be managed by the Forest Department, which has received an initial sanction of ₹36 lakh. According to Divisional Forest Officer K. Ashraf, the plan includes replacing acacia plantations with native and fruit-bearing trees, and introducing eco-friendly infrastructure such as walkways and a watchtower, while strictly prohibiting large-scale construction.

Known for its distinctive laterite terrain, seasonal wildflowers, and panoramic views of the Neeleswaram river, Veermalakunnu is being envisioned as a sustainable tourism destination catering to both families and adventure seekers, with proposed activities like trekking and rappelling.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and working plan are currently in preparation. Once completed, the project is expected to transform this scenic hill into a model for eco-conscious development and nature-based tourism.
