Vellore's $1,000 Cr. Drainage Project: 92% Done and Flowing!

In Vellore, 92% of the ₹1,000 crore underground drainage (UGD) project under the Smart Cities Mission has been completed, according to Corporation Commissioner R. Lakshmanan.

The remaining work includes:

Construction of a 650-metre pipeline bridge across the Palar River,, Pipe-laying in five Old Town streets, and, Establishment of a new pumping station near the fort in Vasanthapuram.

The pipeline bridge, built 20 feet above the riverbed, is designed to channel sewage from 32 wards to a 50 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) in Viruthampattu.

Launched in 2019, the comprehensive four-phase project includes:

750 km of sewer line, 16 pumping stations, Two major STPs
and will serve all 60 wards of the city upon completion.

Key stretches, including Old Bangalore Road, are currently undergoing re-laying, with full road restoration targeted for January 2026. So far, around 81,000 households have been connected to the network, with additional connections scheduled to begin in January.

Work is also in progress on critical segments along NH-48 and near Christian Medical College (CMC), ensuring system coverage in high-traffic and sensitive areas.
