The construction of Vijayawada airport's new integrated terminal in Andhra Pradesh is progressing towards a June 2025 completion, with an estimated cost of Rs 611.80 crore. This significant project, approved by the Union government in June 2020, aims to enhance the airport's capacity and facilities.
Currently, the project has reached 48.5 percent completion, with Rs 279.93 crore already spent by June 2024. Delays were encountered due to environmental clearance issues and natural calamities, including the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple cyclones, and heavy rainfall, which disrupted the timeline.
Under the Greenfield Airports Policy of 2008, the government has given in-principle approval for three greenfield airports in Andhra Pradesh. These include Dagadarthi Airport at a cost of Rs 293 crore, Bhogapuram Airport at Rs 4,727 crore, and Oravakal Airport at Rs 187 crore.
The Oravakal airport successfully commenced operations in March 2021, showcasing the progress in the region's aviation infrastructure. Meanwhile, efforts continue to ensure the timely completion of Vijayawada's new terminal, promising to bolster regional connectivity and economic growth.
The new terminal at Vijayawada airport is eagerly anticipated, poised to significantly improve passenger experience and support the region's development.
