The second phase of the Vizhinjam International Port expansion is scheduled to commence in the second week of January 2026, according to Ports Minister V. N. Vasavan.
The expansion, supported by a ₹10,000-crore investment from Adani Ports, will significantly enhance the port’s infrastructure. The existing 800-metre berth will be extended by 1,200 metres, creating a 2,000-metre berth capable of accommodating simultaneous unloading of ultra-large vessels. Additionally, the 2.96-km breakwater will be extended by 920 metres, increasing its total length to over 3.9 km. “Phases II–IV are targeted for completion by 2028, advancing the timeline from the original 2045 deadline,” Minister Vasavan noted.
Other developments include the completion of a temporary approach road, ready for inauguration, and the port’s receipt of Inland Container Port/Depot (ICP) status. Progress is also being made on railway connectivity and land acquisition for cruise ship facilities.
