The Vizhinjam Port is on the cusp of a significant milestone as its expanded 800-meter berth nears completion, with work expected to finish within the next 15-20 days. This expansion will enhance the port's capacity, allowing it to accommodate either two large container ships or three smaller ones simultaneously. Developed by Adani Ports, the new berth is part of the first phase of the port's development, which is slated for official commissioning in October.
The expansion involves extending the existing 600-meter berth by 200 meters. Currently, the port is in the testing phase, with the newly constructed breakwater and extended berth marking a key development. There is no immediate need for additional cranes, as the 32 cranes from the 600-meter section can be relocated to the new berth. The port's semi-automated systems are designed to optimize the efficiency of loading, unloading, and container handling.
Looking ahead, Vizhinjam Port has ambitious plans for further expansion. Future phases will extend the container berth to a total length of 2,000 meters, enabling the port to accommodate up to five ships at once. This expansion will involve reclaiming around 129 acres from the sea and is expected to be completed by 2028.
Shipping companies have shown strong interest in Vizhinjam Port as a viable alternative to the congested ports of Colombo and Singapore. The port is currently conducting systematic testing with gradual ship arrivals to refine operational processes. According to a port official, the port will start handling more ships as it approaches its official commissioning.
This expansion positions Vizhinjam Port as a significant player in the maritime industry, enhancing its ability to handle larger volumes of cargo and improving its competitive edge in the global shipping market.
