Walmart has signed a lease for over 465,000 sq. ft. of office space in Chennai, marking its second office in the city and reinforcing its commitment to India’s growing tech ecosystem. The five-year lease, beginning this November, highlights Chennai’s transformation from a traditional manufacturing hub into a rising technology center.
While Walmart doesn’t operate retail stores in India, it continues to invest heavily in backend operations. The new Chennai office will complement its largest global technology hub in Bengaluru, which houses around 8,000 employees. This expansion reflects Walmart’s strategy to harness India’s vast tech talent for its global digital initiatives.
Chennai’s emergence as a tech destination has attracted other global giants like AstraZeneca, UPS, and Pfizer, all of which have established technology and innovation centers in the city. Walmart’s move aligns with a broader trend of multinational firms setting up Indian offices for functions ranging from R&D to cybersecurity.
