WRDR Unveils Innovative Anicut Project in Rajasthan

Water Resources Department, Rajasthan is building a new Water Diversion Anicut Unit in Zawar, Udaipur, to change its operations. This 142-crore project aims to improve water management by diverting water from a source river into canals or channels for agricultural and other uses.

The idea involves building a permanent or semi-permanent anicut across the river to raise water levels and reroute it into canals and channels. Develop or expand canal networks, integrate gates and control structures to govern water flow, and maybe include monitoring and automation technologies for efficient water distribution.

A variety of benefits are anticipated. Improved irrigation systems might boost agricultural output and revenues for farmers. The redirected water may also meet Zawar and its neighbors' drinking water needs, improving water security. The anicut also controls monsoon floods and may facilitate small-scale hydropower production.

The project's status and timing are unknown, but the large expenditure and expected effect suggest it is in planning or early execution. The Water Resources Department will provide timetable, contractor, and project updates.

Anicut projects are crucial for water management in arid and semi-arid India, especially Rajasthan. The successful completion of this project might pave the way for similar water diversion projects in Rajasthan and abroad.

As on December 2023, The project is currently in the stage of being approved currently awaiting approval from the government.
