On 15 September 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a series of development projects worth approximately ₹40,000 crore in Purnea, Bihar, aimed at boosting connectivity, infrastructure, and livelihood opportunities across the region.
Key Highlights
Purnea Airport:
The Prime Minister inaugurated the interim terminal building of Purnea Airport, completed in under five months. He also flagged off the first commercial flight, officially putting Purnea and the Seemanchal region on India’s aviation map and significantly enhancing regional connectivity.
Railway Infrastructure:
PM Modi launched the Araria–Galgalia rail line, flagged off one Vande Bharat, two Amrit Bharat, and one passenger train, and laid the foundation stone for the Vikramshila–Kataria rail line. He also announced the doubling of key railway routes, including Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat and Mokama–Munger, to improve capacity and reduce transit times.
Power & Water Resources:
The Prime Minister inaugurated a 2,400 MW thermal power plant at Pirpainti (Bhagalpur), expected to significantly boost energy availability in the region. He also launched Phase 1 of the Kosi–Mechi river interlinking project, a major initiative aimed at improving irrigation coverage and flood control.
These projects represent a major investment in the development of eastern Bihar, reinforcing the government’s focus on balanced regional growth and long-term infrastructure planning.
