CIAL & BPCL Join Forces for Green Hydrogen Plant at Cochin Airport

Cochin International Airport (CIAL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have inked a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a pioneering green hydrogen plant within the airport premises. The ceremonial signing took place at the Legislative Complex, Thiruvananthapuram, in the esteemed presence of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

As per the terms of the agreement, BPCL will spearhead the development of an integrated green hydrogen plant alongside a fuelling station, providing cutting-edge technology and overseeing operational management. CIAL, on the other hand, will contribute land, water, and renewable energy resources to facilitate the project. Initially, the plant's output will be dedicated to powering vehicles within the airport, marking a significant step towards sustainable aviation fuel solutions.

This collaboration stands as a pioneering effort, combining technological innovation with existing infrastructure to establish the first-of-its-kind green hydrogen plant and fuelling station within an airport complex. Green hydrogen, derived from water through renewable energy sources, is a cornerstone of zero-carbon energy strategies, aligning seamlessly with global sustainability goals.

With a cumulative installed capacity of 50 MW, producing two hundred thousand units of power daily, CIAL has consistently demonstrated its commitment to renewable energy. This strategic partnership with BPCL further amplifies its efforts, including the establishment of a 1,000 kW pilot project within the airport premises, augmenting its renewable energy portfolio.

CIAL's unwavering dedication paves the way for a greener future in aviation, while BPCL's indigenous electrolyser, showcased at India Energy Week 2024, underscores its commitment to India's energy independence. Together, this collaboration represents a significant stride towards a zero-carbon future, shaping the trajectory of sustainable aviation fuel solutions in the country.
