CCEA Approves Massive Rs 1,667 Crore Expansion for Srinagar Airport

The proposed expansion of Srinagar International Airport’s Civil Enclave has received formal approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) with an estimated investment of Rs 1,667 crore, designed to radically scale up the Kashmir Valley's passenger-handling capabilities.

Project details submitted by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to the Ministry of Home Affairs outline the construction of a new Integrated Terminal Building spanning 71,500 square meters. This major infrastructure overhaul—approved in February 2026—will elevate the airport's annual capacity from 2.5 million to 10 million passengers while increasing peak-hour handling to 2,900 passengers. Aimed at mitigating seasonal tourism bottlenecks, the project also features a 1,000-vehicle multi-level car park and an expanded apron to accommodate up to 15 aircraft bays.

In parallel with the Srinagar project, authorities are actively evaluating the feasibility of establishing a new airport or alternative civil aviation facility in Katra to further bolster regional transit infrastructure.
