The Centre has granted in-principle approval for the greenfield airport at Parandur, enabling Tamil Nadu to move forward with the tendering process for Chennai’s second airport.
Located about 42 km from the existing Meenambakkam airport, the new facility will span 2,172.72 hectares and include two parallel runways and three midfield terminal buildings. Designed to handle Code 4F aircraft and meet future global aviation standards, the project’s first phase will feature a terminal area of 3,51,380 sq. mtrs and is estimated to cost ₹11,445 crore of the total ₹27,400 crore project outlay.
Submitted by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) in September 2024, the proposal underwent a detailed seven-month review before receiving clearance. Construction is expected to begin by January 2026, with Phase I slated for completion within two years.
The Parandur airport is poised to significantly enhance regional aviation infrastructure, support growing air traffic, and strengthen Chennai’s position as a major aviation hub in South India. This milestone aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader vision to upgrade its transport network and stimulate economic growth.
