PM Modi Unveils New Terminal at International Airport

On December 17, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Surat International Airport in Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in aviation infrastructure. The state-of-the-art facility, constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 150 crore, is designed to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers, demonstrating a remarkable increase in capacity and aesthetic appeal.

Boasting advanced infrastructure, the NITB is capable of accommodating 1,200 domestic passengers and 600 international passengers during peak hours, with provisions for expanding the capacity to 3,000 passengers. The annual handling capacity is set to rise to 55 lakh passengers.

The architectural design of the terminal reflects the local culture of Surat, seamlessly integrating modern functionality with cultural nuances. Furthermore, the NITB is GRIHA-IV compliant, incorporating sustainability features such as a double-insulated roofing system, energy-saving canopies, low-heat gain double glazing units, rainwater harvesting, a water treatment plant, and a sewage treatment plant (STP).

In a pivotal decision on December 16, 2023, the Union Cabinet approved the declaration of Surat Airport as an International Airport. This strategic move positions Surat as a gateway for international travelers and strengthens its role in facilitating export-import activities, particularly in the flourishing diamond and textile industries. With an anticipated surge in both passenger and cargo operations, Surat International Airport is poised to play a crucial role in catalyzing regional development.
