The long-awaited expansion of the civil enclave at Prayagraj Airport has taken a significant step forward with the Ministry of Defence granting clearance for the transfer of nearly 11 acres of land currently under the control of the Indian Air Force. This approval paves the way for the development of a dedicated cargo terminal, poised to transform regional trade and logistics in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The land has been allocated under the Equal Value Land (EVL) mechanism, whereby the Uttar Pradesh government will provide land of equivalent value—estimated at ₹63.94 crore—to the Defence Ministry. As per the agreement, the land must be exclusively used for airport expansion, and all environmental and regulatory compliances, including approvals related to tree felling, must be strictly adhered to.
Authorities expect the expansion to enhance both passenger and cargo handling capacity, positioning Prayagraj as a regional logistics hub. The business community has long advocated for a cargo facility at the airport, citing potential benefits to local trade, agriculture, and exports.
The upcoming cargo terminal is set to open up new domestic and international markets for local products. This includes the GI-tagged Lal Surkha guava from Prayagraj and Kaushambi, as well as fresh vegetables from Bahadurpur, Soraon, and nearby rural areas. Perishable goods can be transported swiftly to metros like Mumbai, from where they can be exported to destinations in the Middle East and Europe.
This development is expected to stimulate economic growth, support farmers and agri-entrepreneurs, and create employment and business opportunities across the region.
