The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted approval for the elevation of Ayodhya Airport to international status. The airport will now be named Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham. This decision is anticipated to enhance Ayodhya's economic prospects and solidify its status as a global pilgrimage destination.
Strategically positioned, Ayodhya is poised to emerge as a significant economic hub, attracting businesses aligned with the city's rich historical heritage. This move is also expected to welcome foreign pilgrims and tourists, thereby contributing to the city's cultural and economic growth. The airport's nomenclature pays homage to Maharishi Valmiki, the revered sage credited with composing the epic Ramayana, highlighting the deep cultural roots of Ayodhya.
In its initial phase, the airport is designed to accommodate 10 lakh passengers annually. Upon completion of the second phase, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport is projected to serve 60 lakh commuters annually. The first phase, developed at a cost exceeding Rs 1,450 crore, includes a terminal building covering an area of 6,500 sq mtrs. The terminal's architectural facade draws inspiration from the upcoming Shri Ram Mandir of Ayodhya.
Additionally, the Ayodhya airport terminal boasts various sustainability features, such as an insulated roofing system, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, water treatment plant, and a solar power plant. These eco-friendly features align with GRIHA-five-star ratings, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility.
