On January 7, 2024, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) celebrated the initiation of oil production from its flagship deep-water project in the Krishna Godavari basin, located offshore the eastern coast of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended this significant milestone, emphasizing its pivotal role in India's energy journey and its contribution to the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' mission, foreseeing numerous economic benefits.
Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Housing and Urban Affairs, highlighted that this marked the commencement of 'First Oil' production from the challenging deepwater Krishna Godavari basin (KG-DWN-98/2 Block, situated off the coast of the Bay of Bengal).
The successful execution of Phase-I in March 2020 saw the initiation of gas production from the U field of the KG-DWN-98/2 Block within a remarkable 10 months. The recent commencement of oil production from the 'M' field of KGDWN-98/2 indicates the near completion of Phase-II.
To address the technical challenges of this venture, ONGC employed innovative pipe-in-pipe technology, a pioneering initiative in India. The majority of fabrication works were efficiently carried out at the modular fabrication facility at Kattupalli. This ambitious project is poised to boost ONGC's total oil and gas production by 11 percent and 15 percent, respectively, contributing significantly to India's energy self-sufficiency.
