Silchar Airport Gets Final Land: 992 Acres Transferred to AAI

The Assam government has approved the transfer of 992 acres of land at Doloo Tea Estate in Cachar district to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the development of a greenfield airport near Silchar.

With this allocation, the total land for the project increases from 2,500 bighas to 3,000 bighas (approximately 992 acres), marking a major milestone. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that this step will allow the state to seek Union Cabinet approval for the new airport. The decision comes as the existing Kumbhirgram Airport, a defence facility, is unable to meet the growing demand for civil air traffic.

The proposed airport is expected to significantly improve the region’s connectivity and economic prospects. CM Sarma noted that this decision builds on earlier measures, including financial assistance provided to 1,296 families at Doloo Tea Estate in November 2022.
