From Bikes to Batteries: VinFast Makes a Strategic U-Turn in India

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is gearing up to inaugurate its maiden manufacturing facility in India, strategically situated in Tamil Nadu. This state-of-the-art plant in Thoothukudi will focus on the production of electric vehicle batteries, marking a significant step for VinFast beyond its initial plans of vehicle assembly in Vietnam.

Back in October 2023, VinFast made headlines by revealing its intentions to establish assembly plants in India and Indonesia. Each of these facilities is projected to have a robust capacity of up to 50,000 cars annually, with an initial capital expenditure of approximately USD 200 million. The anticipated commencement of production at the Indian plant is slated for 2026.

In addition to the manufacturing ambitions, VinFast is contemplating the introduction of both electric scooters (e-scooters) and electric cars (e-cars) to the Indian market.

It's worth noting that Chennai and various districts in Tamil Nadu are already bustling hubs for several electric vehicle players, including prominent names such as Ola Electric and Ather, contributing to the region's growing significance in the electric mobility sector.
