Gujarat is set to further consolidate its position as a major automobile manufacturing hub with Maruti Suzuki announcing an investment of ₹35,000 crore to establish a second car manufacturing plant at Khoraj near Gandhinagar.
The proposed facility will have an eventual annual production capacity of 10 lakh vehicles. Production is expected to commence in phases, with the first phase scheduled to begin by FY 2029. The plant will comprise four manufacturing units, each with a capacity of 2.5 lakh vehicles per year. The project is expected to generate direct employment for over 12,000 people, in addition to significant indirect job opportunities through ancillary industries.
The investment aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Make in India, Made for the World.” Highlighting its significance, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the project would strengthen India’s automobile manufacturing corridor. He attributed Gujarat’s success in attracting large investments to its policy-driven governance, robust infrastructure, and long-standing manufacturing ties with Japan. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project was signed during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2024.
