The Hubballi-Dharwad Bus Rapid Transit System (HD-BRTS) is set to embark on several Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) projects near the Navanagar BRTS bus stop, aiming to enhance public amenities in the area. With a budget of Rs 3 crore, these projects will include a food park, transit plaza, children’s park, and public toilets, all designed to benefit the local community, especially children. The development is planned on approximately 7,250 square meters of land owned by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, with construction expected to begin soon after the tender process is completed.
Navanagar, strategically located in the heart of the Hubballi-Dharwad twin cities, is a bustling area that serves as a key center for services like healthcare, education, and commerce for nearby villages. The excellent connectivity provided by the Navanagar BRTS bus station makes it an ideal location for the TOD initiative. Sanctioned by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport in Bengaluru, the project aims to create vibrant, sustainable urban spaces where residents can live, work, and play.
HD-BRTS General Manager R. Gudaraddi highlighted the project's focus on integrating land use with transport planning to foster walkable, livable communities. "The TOD project will efficiently utilize transit facilities while providing citizens access to open green spaces and public amenities," Gudaraddi explained. The initiative is expected to set a precedent for sustainable urban development in the region.
The project will feature a food court with 12 stalls and a public toilet, a transit plaza with seating and a garden, and a children’s park equipped with play structures, safety features, and an auditorium. Additionally, a traffic park will be constructed to educate children on traffic rules, featuring miniature roads, signals, signage boards, and pedestrian crossings.
Local residents, including Basavaraj Jamboti, have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the HD-BRTS will ensure the projects are of high quality and benefit both Navanagar's residents and those from neighboring areas. The TOD project is expected to be completed within a year, providing the community with much-needed amenities and improved urban spaces.
