In a significant milestone for sustainable waste management and clean energy, Prayagraj’s Arail-based waste processing plant has commenced the production of Compressed Biogas (CBG) and compost from wet waste.
Inaugurated by Mayor Umesh Chandra Ganesh Kesarwani, the facility is Uttar Pradesh’s first and India’s second plant of its kind. In its initial phase, it processes 100 tonnes of wet waste daily, generating around 4 tonnes of CBG. At full capacity, the plant aims to handle 200 tonnes of waste and produce 9 tonnes of CBG per day.
The generated CBG will be supplied to Indian Oil Corporation and Adani Gas Pipeline, with future plans to extend distribution to households for cooking fuel. Additionally, the plant is producing organic manure from residual waste, with fertilizer sales expected to commence soon.
Municipal Commissioner Seelam Sai Teja emphasized that the project’s success hinges on citizen participation in effective waste segregation, which is key to maximizing resource recovery and sustaining clean energy generation in the city.
