GAIL Achieves Major Milestone on Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Pipeline

GAIL (India) Ltd. has made substantial progress on the Jagdishpur-Haldia-Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline (JHBDPL), also known as the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga, with over 97.6% of the pipeline already laid. Of this, nearly 96.6% has been brought into commercial operation, marking a major milestone in India’s gas infrastructure development.

The integrated pipeline network, including the Barauni–Guwahati extension, spans an authorised length of 3,306 km and traverses six key states: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Assam. As of now, 3,227 km of pipeline has been laid, and 3,119 km is operational. Key operational sections include Phulpur–Dobhi–Bokaro–Durgapur, Bokaro–Angul–Dhamra, and Dobhi–Barauni–Guwahati.

Currently, the network is transporting 12.26 million standard cubic metres per day (MSCMD) of natural gas. It supplies a wide range of consumers, including four fertiliser plants, the Barauni and Paradip refineries, various industrial units, and 32 city gas distribution (CGD) networks. Beneficiary cities include Varanasi, Patna, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Kolkata.

In the 294 km Durgapur–Haldia section, 132 km up to Kolkata has been commissioned. Of the remaining 162 km to Haldia, 103 km has been completed. Meanwhile, in the Dhamra–Haldia segment (authorised at 240 km), 198 km has already been laid.

Once fully completed, this expansive pipeline project is set to serve as a transformative energy corridor, boosting access to clean energy across India’s eastern and northeastern regions.
