Japanese trading company Sojitz has joined forces with IOC GPS Renewables (IGRPL)—a joint venture between Bengaluru-based GPS Renewables and Indian Oil Corporation—to develop and operate biomethane production facilities across India. This partnership supports renewable energy expansion while addressing the environmental impact of agricultural waste.
Under the plan, IGRPL will establish 30 biomethane plants by FY 2026–27, with a combined annual production capacity of 160,000 tonnes. The initiative involves an investment exceeding USD 400 million. These plants will convert agricultural waste into biomethane, promoting both sustainable energy and effective waste management.
Biomethane, a purified form of biogas, is a clean fuel alternative that helps cut greenhouse gas emissions and supports a circular economy. Sojitz, which sees India as a strategic market, has made green transformation a core business focus and created a dedicated GX unit to lead its renewable energy efforts in the country.
The partnership will leverage GPS Renewables' technical expertise and Indian Oil Corporation’s vast gas distribution network to accelerate deployment and expand market reach. Mainak Chakraborty, CEO and Co-Founder of GPS Renewables, emphasized the shared commitment to strengthening India’s energy self-reliance and reducing fossil fuel dependence.
