Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma will inaugurate the Rs 647.62-crore Firozpur Feeder Reconstruction project in Sriganganagar on December 5, coinciding with the centenary celebrations of the Gang Canal, originally commissioned in 1925 by Maharaja Ganga Singh.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is also expected to attend, underscoring the project’s interstate importance. Approved by the Central Water Commission during its 158th advisory committee meeting in April, the project aims to modernise the feeder, boosting its carrying capacity from 9,000 to 13,842 cusecs. The upgrade will help retain surplus monsoon water that would otherwise flow into Pakistan and enhance irrigation across 3.14 lakh hectares in Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh districts.
Under the cost-sharing arrangement, Punjab will contribute Rs 379.12 crore and Rajasthan Rs 268.50 crore. The reconstruction will address long-standing issues such as seepage, siltation, and structural weaknesses in the century-old system. Rajasthan plans to complete the project by 2027, marking 100 years since the canal’s inauguration.
