GRSE and NHIDCL Join Forces for Modular Bridge Breakthrough

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) on August 29, 2024. This partnership aims to fabricate, supply, and launch Double-Lane Class 70 modular steel and Bailey bridges, a critical infrastructure upgrade designed to bolster connectivity in India’s strategic border areas.

These modular steel bridges, developed by GRSE, are a testament to India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, showcasing an indigenous solution that enhances mobility in challenging terrains. With a 7.5-meter carriageway, these bridges are capable of supporting two-way traffic, including wheeled and tracked vehicles up to 100/70 metric tons. The initiative not only facilitates the swift movement of troops and equipment but also strengthens India’s defense capabilities along its borders.

GRSE’s expertise in bridge construction is well-established, with the company having previously delivered 44 similar bridges to the Border Roads Organization (BRO). The Portable Steel Bridge Division of GRSE has an impressive track record, having supplied over 5,700 bridges to various entities, including the Indian Army and state public works departments.

As a Miniratna Category I Company since 2006, GRSE has consistently demonstrated its engineering prowess, having built 109 warships for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard—the highest number produced by any Indian shipyard. This latest collaboration with NHIDCL further solidifies GRSE’s role as a key player in enhancing India’s infrastructure and defense readiness.

The MoU represents a strategic step forward in ensuring that India’s border regions are well-equipped to handle logistical and military needs, contributing to the country’s overall security and infrastructural development.
