Chennai's future is on track: Corridor-5 sees first tracks laid in Phase-II project

The Phase-II project of the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) is progressing with significant momentum, particularly in Corridor-5 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur), covering a total length of 44.6 km. Notably, track laying has commenced in one of the stretches within this corridor.

Similar to the other corridors, namely Corridor-3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT) and Corridor-4 (Light House to Poonamallee), which collectively form the 116-km Phase-II project, Corridor-5 encompasses a combination of elevated and underground sections. While the underground stretch between Kolathur and Villivakkam has faced some delays, the construction of elevated sections, spanning from Madhavaram to Koyambedu, Koyambedu to Ullagaram, and Ullagaram to Elcot, is progressing smoothly.

Recent developments include the initiation of track laying between the proposed stations at Echankadu and Vellakal on the 44.6-km corridor, with ongoing construction of piers across Corridor-5. Among the planned 1,500 piers, approximately 150 between Madhavaram and Koyambedu, 142 between Koyambedu and Ullagaram, and 205 between Ullagaram and Elcot have been completed.

Anticipated to be operational by the end of 2026, the first stretch within Corridor-5, spanning from Madhavaram to Retteri, is projected to commence track work in approximately six months.

Simultaneously, CMRL is focusing on completing the construction between Poonamallee and Porur Junction, with plans for commissioning by the end of 2025.
