Chattergala Tunnel: All-Weather Road to Connect J&K on Fast Track

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to commence work on the Chattergala tunnel project, aimed at ensuring all-weather road connectivity between Kathua and Doda districts in Jammu and Kashmir. The project, estimated at Rs 4,000 crore, was announced by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during his visit to Srinagar.

Accompanied by Union Minister of State Jitendera Singh, Gadkari highlighted that the proposal for the Chattergala tunnel was initiated six years ago. Despite the preparation of a detailed project report by the Border Roads Organisation agency Beacons, lack of funds delayed its implementation.

Singh further elaborated that NHAI will oversee the construction of both the Chattergala tunnel and a new national highway originating from Kathua’s Lakhanpur. This highway will traverse through popular tourist spots including Basohli and Bani, extending to Bhaderwah and Doda.

The project aims to enhance connectivity and infrastructure in the region, facilitating smoother travel and boosting economic activities. It is part of the government's broader initiative to improve transportation networks and promote tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Local officials and residents have welcomed the development, anticipating significant socio-economic benefits once the project is completed. NHAI's immediate focus is on initiating construction activities to meet the region's infrastructural needs and improve overall connectivity.
