On February 15, 2024, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) received environmental clearance (EC) from the Central government for its solid waste processing plant located at Umber in Surat district. Following this approval, the project development agency is set to commence work at the site.
SMC had greenlit the construction of the plant with a budget of Rs 345 crore. With the closure of the Khajod landfill site due to reaching its maximum capacity, the necessity for a new solid waste processing plant with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per day has arisen. This new facility will be established on a 3.40 lakh sq. mtrs. area in Umber.
The project encompasses processing, treatment, and disposal facilities for solid waste. According to the stipulations, the project is slated for completion within 18 months and will be operated by the firm for 10 years upon becoming operational.
Funding for the project will see Rs 167 crore sourced from the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, while the remaining costs will be covered by grants from state and Central governments. There are plans for SMC to lay the foundation stone of the solid waste processing plant on February 22, 2024, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Vansi Borsi in Navsari for the inauguration of several projects.
