MoRTH Launches ₹1 Lakh Crore Plan for 74 Tunnels

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has unveiled a massive ₹1 lakh crore plan to build 74 new tunnels across India, covering 273 kilometers. Announced by Roads Minister Nitin Gadkari, the project aims to strengthen the country’s highway infrastructure, ensuring smoother travel through difficult terrains.

Speaking at the Tunnelling India conference, Gadkari emphasized the importance of quality, noting that all under-construction tunnels will undergo regular performance audits to ensure efficiency. The project is part of the government's broader vision to enhance infrastructure and improve connectivity.

A key aspect of the plan is encouraging foreign investment, with Gadkari proposing that foreign partners hold a 51% stake in joint ventures for tunnel construction. This strategy is designed to attract experienced bidders and improve project execution standards.

Gadkari also highlighted the need for technological innovation to tackle the challenges posed by India's diverse terrain. He stressed that adopting global best practices will be essential for cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure development.

The government has already completed 35 tunnels, spanning 49 kilometers with an investment of ₹15,000 crore, signaling its commitment to improving road infrastructure across the nation. The new tunnel projects are set to significantly enhance travel and trade routes.
