JNPA Expands Liquid Cargo Capacity with New Berths

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is poised to significantly enhance its liquid cargo handling capacity with the addition of two new berths, set to become fully operational within the next six months. Chairman Unmesh Wagh highlighted the critical need for these berths due to current capacity constraints causing significant ship waiting times. With JNPA currently managing around 6.5 million tonnes of liquid cargo annually at its existing berths, the new facilities are a welcome expansion.

To address the increasing demand, JNPA invested ₹225 crore from internal sources to develop these berths on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) basis. While the berths are already servicing edible oil cargo, full operational capability will be achieved with the installation of all handling arms and completion of remaining construction activities in the coming months.

JSW Infrastructure Limited has secured the contract to operate the new berths, following a successful bid of ₹252 per tonne royalty. The estimated capital expenditure for JSW Infrastructure stands at ₹69 crore, with a concession agreement finalized on April 8. This development is expected to significantly reduce vessel waiting times and associated demurrage costs.

The new berths, designed to accommodate larger vessels with expanded parcel sizes, will not only alleviate the pressure on existing facilities but also enhance overall cargo volumes. In the first quarter of FY 2024-25, JNPA handled 14,88,295 tonnes of liquid cargo, a slight decrease from the previous year’s 14,98,625 tonnes.

With these strategic enhancements, JNPA is set to reinforce its position as a critical hub for liquid cargo in Navi Mumbai, driving efficiency and capacity to meet future demands.
