AstraZeneca Ups Chennai Presence with ₹250 Crore Expansion

AstraZeneca India Private Limited (AZIPL) is set to invest ₹250 crore ($30 million) to expand its Global Innovation and Technology Centre (GITC) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This strategic expansion will create around 1,300 new roles, aimed at driving innovation and enhancing operational efficiency worldwide. The expanded facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Minister of Industries TRB Rajaa, British Deputy High Commissioner to India Christina Scott CMG, and AstraZeneca’s Vice President for Asia Area Sylvia Varela.

This expansion marks AstraZeneca's 45th anniversary in India. By 2025, the company aims to leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and supply chain analytics through the enhanced GITC. "We are constantly evolving our technologies to stay ahead in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries," said Siva Padmanabhan, Managing Director of AZIPL.

Minister Rajaa praised Chennai's growth as India's GCC capital, highlighting the city's significant office space absorption and job creation. AstraZeneca's office space at Ramanujan IT City will expand by 1.8 lakh sq ft, making it the company's largest GCC. The current office spans 3.34 lakh sq ft and houses over 4,000 employees.

The investment underscores AstraZeneca's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology and innovation in healthcare. As the company expands its Chennai hub, it aims to better serve patients globally by infusing advanced technological practices into the healthcare ecosystem.

Chennai's development as a leading hub for global capability centres continues to attract significant investments, bolstering the city's reputation and economic growth. AstraZeneca's expansion is a testament to the city's strategic importance and the skilled workforce it offers.

The expansion project for AstraZeneca India's Global Innovation and Technology Centre in Chennai does not appear to be a contract or tender-based project. It is an internal investment by the company for its own development and expansion purposes.
