Boost for Medical Education: NMC Approves 113 Colleges

National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned 113 new medical colleges across India, with the most in Uttar Pradesh, to improve medical education infrastructure. Maharashtra has 14, Rajasthan 12, and Telangana 11. UP has 22 new colleges. Medical experts are in demand, therefore this expansion intends to improve healthcare countrywide.

West Bengal would get eight medical colleges, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh seven. Kerala gets two new colleges, while Karnataka and Tamil Nadu get five. Uttarakhand would get three medical colleges, Odisha and Gujarat two. Haryana, Delhi, Assam, Punjab, Sikkim, and Tripura have gained approval for one new medical college, expanding educational prospects.

The NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) announced these approvals on July 6, 2024. Over 800 medical colleges in India, including 50 government ones, are now open. The expansion is projected to significantly boost undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate medical seats, meeting the growing need for competent medical professionals.

New NMC standards allow medical colleges to start with 50 seats if they have a functional hospital and professors in all clinical departments, streamlining the creation procedure. Qualified hospitals must have 200 beds and 20 ICU beds. This reform will help medical colleges open quickly in healthcare-rich areas.

NMC wants a medical college in every area to provide medical education and healthcare. This ambitious strategy illustrates the commission's commitment to enhancing urban and rural healthcare quality and availability in India.

Government laws and control usually dictate the approval and establishment of these medical institutions, not a tender or contract decision. Regulatory approval from the NMC is not a contract.
