The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has made significant progress in the Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor (VAMMC) by acquiring 360 hectares of the 1,000 hectares required for the project. This corridor is set to transform connectivity between Raigad, Thane, and Palghar districts, providing a major boost to infrastructure and transportation in the region.
The ambitious expressway, estimated to cost ₹55,000 crore, will feature access-controlled roads with eight to 14 lanes, each lane spanning 3.75 meters in width. This will accommodate a high volume of traffic and reduce congestion in these rapidly growing districts. The project aims to enhance travel efficiency between the western coastal belt and northern Maharashtra.
Land acquisition is being carried out as per the provisions of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement (LARR) Act of 2015, ensuring fair compensation for landowners affected by the project. The completion of the project is expected by 2030, making it a key part of Maharashtra’s long-term infrastructure development strategy.
Meanwhile, 14 civil engineering firms have submitted 33 bids for the construction of Phase-I, which spans 96.47 kilometers of the total 126-kilometer expressway. These bids were opened in May 2024, and technical evaluations are currently underway.
This project is classified as a contract, with MSRDC awarding contracts for various phases to engineering firms. The Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor is set to be a game-changer, boosting regional trade, employment, and economic growth.
