The Department of Fisheries has approved a proposal from the Andaman & Nicobar Administration for the development of a smart and integrated fishing harbour at Mayabunder, with an estimated cost of ₹199.24 crore.
The project will receive 100% central funding under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and is being designed under the Blue Port Initiative. The harbour will incorporate modern technology, IoT-enabled systems, and sustainable fisheries management practices, providing safe landing and berthing facilities for 430 fishing vessels and an annual fish landing capacity of 9,900 tonnes. The development is expected to enhance fish-handling efficiency, improve operational safety, and support energy-efficient operations.
Given the region’s rich marine resources and its significant role in India’s fisheries sector, the Mayabunder harbour is anticipated to contribute to the government’s target of achieving ₹1 lakh crore in seafood exports by 2030–31.
