NHPC Partners with Maharashtra for 7,350 MW Pumped Storage Projects

NHPC Limited has re-signed an MoU with Maharashtra’s Water Resources Department to develop four large-scale Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) with a total capacity of 7,350 MW. This agreement comes in the wake of a policy update on July 31, 2024, aimed at promoting PSPs and hybrid renewable energy initiatives through Public-Private Partnerships.

The renewed MoU focuses on the development of four PSPs: Kengadi (1,550 MW), Savitri (2,250 MW), Kalu (1,150 MW), and Jalond (2,400 MW). These projects are part of Maharashtra’s broader plan to enhance its energy storage capabilities while integrating with renewable energy sources like solar and wind.

PSPs play a crucial role in stabilizing energy grids by storing excess energy and releasing it during peak demand. With the addition of these storage facilities, NHPC aims to support Maharashtra's transition to a more sustainable energy mix and reduce reliance on traditional power sources.

This collaboration aligns with India’s growing focus on renewable energy and energy storage, further solidifying Maharashtra’s position as a leader in renewable energy initiatives. The PSPs will not only boost the state’s energy security but also contribute to environmental sustainability.
