SAIL’s 15,000-Tonne Contribution Powers Mizoram Rail Project

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna PSU and one of India’s leading steel producers, has supplied approximately 15,000 tonnes of steel for the 51-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025.

Of the total supply:

Around 10,000 tonnes comprised R-260 grade prime rails manufactured at SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant

The remaining 5,000 tonnes included plates, TMT bars, and structural steel sourced from SAIL’s Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur, Burnpur, and Bhilai plants

The project is a critical part of India’s push to enhance connectivity in the Northeast, and SAIL’s contribution highlights its role as a trusted partner in nation-building.

A senior SAIL official stated, “Our steel provides the strength and quality needed for vital infrastructure, and we’re proud to support this strategic initiative in the Northeast.”

SAIL has consistently played a key role in landmark national infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Jiribam–Tupul–Imphal Broad Gauge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra–Worli Sea Link, and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges.

Its involvement in the Bairabi–Sairang rail project reaffirms its commitment to supporting India’s infrastructure growth with high-quality, domestically manufactured steel.
