Adani Group's fully-owned Kutch Copper smelter in Mundra, Gujarat, is on track to begin operations in the coming weeks, with the first unit of its copper refinery having already been commissioned earlier this year.
The smelter will undergo an expansion to achieve a total capacity of one million tonnes, following the stabilization of the initial 500,000-tonne unit within the next three quarters. This expansion, estimated to cost between USD 700-800 million, will bring the total investment in the facility to approximately USD two billion. Once completed, the Mundra smelter is expected to be one of the largest single-location smelters globally.
Initially, Kutch Copper will source its copper concentrate from Latin America but is exploring additional suppliers from Australia and Africa to diversify its supply chain. Around 40 percent of the copper produced will be utilized by the Adani Group for its renewable energy, transmission, and wires and cables sectors. The second phase of the smelter, which will double its capacity to one million tonnes per annum, is anticipated to begin once the initial unit stabilizes, with funding expected to come from the cash flows generated by the ongoing operations. Expansion plans are not expected to proceed before FY27.
