US-based Applied Materials has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to establish an advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Chennai. The MoU was signed in San Francisco, in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. The CoE will focus on semiconductor and equipment manufacturing, aiming to boost the state's growing semiconductor ecosystem by collaborating with local universities and industry partners.
This strategic partnership is designed to develop a future-ready talent pool to support the chip industry, with plans to create over 500 technical job opportunities in the coming years. The CoE will also serve as a hub for research and development, fostering innovation in semiconductor technologies and strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Industries Minister TRB Rajaa emphasized the state’s commitment to growing the semiconductor ecosystem by fostering industry partnerships and cultivating a research-oriented culture. He highlighted that this initiative aligns with Tamil Nadu's broader goal of achieving a USD one trillion economy by 2030, positioning the state as a leading knowledge and innovation hub in South Asia.
The partnership with Applied Materials is expected to accelerate the growth of Tamil Nadu’s advanced electronics and semiconductor sectors, providing a significant boost to the state's economic development. By attracting leading global companies and investing in high-tech industries, Tamil Nadu aims to become a key player in the global semiconductor market.
This MoU marks a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu's efforts to build a robust semiconductor ecosystem, with the potential to drive innovation, create high-quality jobs, and contribute to the state’s ambitious economic goals.
