DPIIT Eases Quality Burden for AC Makers: One-Year Relaxation in Norms

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has announced a temporary relaxation in the quality control order (QCO) norms applicable to air conditioners (ACs) and associated components.

According to a notification from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, hermetic compressors with a capacity exceeding 7,000 W (2 TR) are now exempted from the order for a duration of one year, benefiting manufacturers of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment along with related parts.

Furthermore, the government has granted an exemption for 200 goods or articles imported annually for research and development (R&D) purposes by manufacturers. It is important to note that these imported items are strictly prohibited from being sold in the market and must be disposed of as scrap.

Manufacturers are now permitted an exemption for 6,000 domestically produced or imported hermetic compressors and heat exchangers each year, specifically for maintenance and sales. Additionally, temperature sensing controls have been removed from the list of regulated items.

These relaxations aim to foster innovation, support R&D activities, and facilitate the maintenance and sales processes for manufacturers in the air conditioning and refrigeration sector.
