Michelin Shifts Gears: Local Tyre Production Begins in Chennai

French tyre giant Michelin is set to begin manufacturing passenger vehicle tyres at its Chennai facility this year, marking a major step toward localisation. The company is investing ₹564 crore to establish production capacity, with plans to expand its product portfolio to serve various market segments.

"Our first commitment is to bring a product that the Indian market needs," said Pierre-Louis Dubourdeau, Member of the Group Executive Committee and Executive VP Manufacturing. Initially, Michelin will focus on larger vehicles, particularly SUVs, to highlight its advanced technology.

With the first locally produced tyre expected this year, the company will gradually expand its offerings, adapting them to Indian road conditions. Michelin aims to cater to premium segments, especially higher-seat-size SUVs. While some tyres will continue to be imported due to technical constraints, the company is working toward broader market coverage in India.

The Chennai manufacturing unit is expected to boost Michelin’s operations in India, which have been limited since 2020 due to government-imposed import restrictions on certain pneumatic tyres. Currently, the company sells premium, performance-focused passenger vehicle tyres in limited quantities.
