GMDC x Cambridge: Powering India’s Critical Mineral Intelligence

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) has partnered with the University of Cambridge to establish India’s first AI-powered Rare Earth Supply Chain Observatory at the International Centre of Excellence in Mining (iCEM), marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s capabilities in critical mineral intelligence and supply chain monitoring.

Supported by GMDC, iCEM will provide access to the University of Cambridge’s advanced research expertise, analytical frameworks, and global academic network, creating a platform that combines international knowledge with India’s mining and mineral development ecosystem. The initiative reflects GMDC’s broader strategy to evolve into a knowledge-driven organization while enhancing Gujarat’s position as a key hub for critical mineral research, innovation, and policy support.

The Observatory will utilize Artificial Intelligence to develop an integrated intelligence platform capable of tracking the entire rare earth elements (REE) value chain in real time, from resource extraction and processing to manufacturing and end-use industries. The platform is expected to provide insights into market dynamics, including price movements, processing capacities, supply chain disruptions, trade flows, and geopolitical developments that influence global rare earth markets.

Developed in collaboration with the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) at Cambridge, a globally recognized centre for research on industrial resilience and critical mineral supply chains, the project will be implemented over a two-year period with an investment of GBP 600,000. The initiative aims to deliver scalable analytical tools that enhance India’s ability to monitor, assess, and respond to evolving challenges in the rare earth sector, thereby strengthening supply chain resilience and long-term strategic competitiveness.
