Hubballi Commissions Landmark ₹157-Crore Green Charcoal Plant

Hubballi is leading Karnataka into a cleaner, greener future! The city has just commissioned the state's very first green charcoal plant at Gobbur—a massive ₹157 crore waste-to-energy initiative spanning eight acres.

Operated by NTPC, this pioneering facility transforms everyday municipal solid waste into high-value fuel, processing around 200 tonnes of trash daily. An impressive 30% to 35% of this waste will be converted directly into green charcoal to help power the Kudligi thermal power plant in Vijayapura. Thanks to a smart dual-unit setup with a combined capacity of 120 tonnes per day, the plant will keep running smoothly even during routine maintenance.

Following Varanasi, this is only the second project of its kind in all of India. By turning urban waste challenges into sustainable energy solutions, Hubballi is shrinking local landfills, cleaning up our cities, and proving that a circular economy isn't just an idea—it’s happening right now.
