Chingrighata Cleared for Kolkata Metro Orange Line

The Kolkata Metro Orange Line has received another major push after traffic authorities approved a traffic block at the busy Chingrighata crossing, enabling construction teams to bridge the final 366m viaduct gap on the Beleghata–Sector V stretch.

While traffic movement remains unaffected for now, the airport-bound flank of the road had earlier been widened to create space for barricading and the construction of portal piers — dual-legged support structures designed to accommodate the viaduct’s curvature.

A total of seven piers, including three portal piers, have been constructed along the 120m stretch. However, work on portal piers numbered 828, 829 and 830 had remained partially incomplete for months due to pending permissions from traffic police, despite multiple traffic trials being conducted at the site.

Afcons Infrastructure, which is executing the Orange Line package connecting New Town to the airport, has missed three project deadlines because of delays in obtaining traffic blocks along VIP Road. The contract covers the 3.5km stretch from City Centre II to the airport, including two elevated metro stations at Chinar Park and VIP Road, along with the final 850m underground section leading into the airport terminal area.

The largely elevated Orange Line descends underground approximately 850m before the airport, where a ramp section is currently under construction near Kaikhali.
