Full Steam Ahead: ₹1,482 Cr Vizhinjam Rail Tunnel Goes to Tender

The tender for the ₹1,482.92 crore Vizhinjam–Balaramapuram Railway Tunnel Project is expected to be floated next week, marking a significant step toward enhancing connectivity to the upcoming Vizhinjam International Seaport.

Officials said the project has received all required approvals from the Kerala government. The implementing agency, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, is expected to invite bids once the model code of conduct is withdrawn, likely later this week. Following that, the tendering process is expected to move ahead promptly.

Divya S. Iyer, Managing Director of Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited, said the project has entered a critical stage, adding that all statutory approvals are in place and the process remains on schedule.

According to officials, construction activities could commence within two months of the contract award. The first phase is likely to begin from the Balaramapuram side, where land acquisition has already been completed. Acquisition in the remaining sections is at an advanced stage, and rehabilitation packages for affected families have been approved.

The project includes the development of a 10.7-km rail corridor connecting the port to the national railway network, with nearly 9.4 km planned underground. The tunnel will be built using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method at depths of 25–30 metres to minimise disruption in densely populated coastal areas.

The rail corridor is considered a vital component of the broader Vizhinjam port infrastructure network. Once operational, it is expected to reduce dependence on road-based freight movement, ease traffic congestion, and improve cargo evacuation efficiency by providing seamless rail connectivity from Vizhinjam through Balaramapuram to major markets across southern and western India.

The project is targeted for completion by the end of 2028, aligning with the port’s long-term expansion strategy and its goal of emerging as a major logistics and maritime hub.
