The Irrigation and Flood Control Board has approved a major project to revamp the Najafgarh drain in Delhi, addressing long-standing siltation and flood risks. A recent bathymetric survey found more than 91 lakh cubic metres of silt accumulated in the drain, severely restricting water flow. The project will involve large-scale desilting through an Expression of Interest (EoI) process.
The board has also sanctioned a ₹453.95-crore plan to construct two-lane service roads along both sides of the drain, improving mobility and access in the area. This initiative forms part of broader efforts to upgrade Delhi’s drainage infrastructure and enhance flood resilience. Once completed, the project is expected to improve the drain’s efficiency and reduce monsoon waterlogging, benefiting nearby communities and businesses.
