EIL and HPCL Complete India's Largest Rock Cavern for LPG Storage

Engineers India Limited (EIL) has successfully completed India’s largest underground rock cavern for LPG storage for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) at Mangalore, Karnataka, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy infrastructure.

Built within HPCL’s existing LPG plant, the massive 80,000 metric tonne (MT) capacity cavern now stands as the single largest LPG storage facility in India. What makes this project especially noteworthy is its innovative design—the rock cavern was excavated directly beneath operational surface facilities, enabling dual land usage and efficient space utilisation, setting a new benchmark for future industrial infrastructure.

EIL served as the EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management) consultant, providing end-to-end services including basic and detailed engineering, project management, construction supervision, and commissioning support. The project culminated in the successful “gas-in” of the facility, signifying operational readiness.

“This project is a shining example of engineering excellence and collaborative execution of a complex mega project. The successful completion of this cavern will significantly strengthen India’s LPG storage infrastructure and ensure energy security for the nation,” said Vartika Shukla, Chairperson & Managing Director, EIL.

The accomplishment underscores EIL’s capabilities in delivering high-stakes, technically challenging infrastructure, while advancing India’s strategic energy goals.
