Haider Canal STP: A New Era for Lucknow's Gomti River

The Haider Canal Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) near the 1090 intersection in Lucknow became fully operational earlier this month, following the successful completion of trial runs.

Currently treating approximately 110 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, the plant discharges treated water into the Gomti River, according to Jal Nigam officials. Connected to the Haider Canal nullah, which carries domestic sewage from nearby residential areas, the facility employs a multistage treatment process. On a monthly basis, it is capable of handling up to 3,300 MLD.

About 5% of solid waste is removed during treatment, but post-rainfall garbage inflow often reduces the plant’s operational capacity from its designed 118 MLD to 110 MLD or lower. Officials emphasize the importance of upstream drain cleaning and improved solid waste management to maintain consistent performance.

The commissioning of this STP marks a key milestone in Lucknow’s efforts to clean the Gomti River and strengthen its wastewater management infrastructure, with further efficiency gains expected as inflow quality improves.
