Maharashtra's Power Pledge: 5,800 MW Added, ₹23,800 Cr. Invested

The Maharashtra government has signed MoUs with multiple companies to develop pumped storage hydroelectric projects involving investments worth ₹23,800 crore and the creation of an estimated 11,500 job opportunities.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra aims to become India’s leading hub for pumped storage, having already achieved a potential generation capacity of 76,115 MW in this segment. The newly announced projects will contribute an additional 5,800 MW to the state’s power capacity. Key initiatives include the Western Ghats Pumped Storage Project (Pune, Raigad), the Koyna Stage-6 project (Satara), and the Sarovar Pumped Storage Project (Ahilyanagar), in partnership with JSW Neo Energy, Mahagenco Renewable Energy, and New Asian Infrastructure Development.

Fadnavis highlighted the state’s natural advantage due to the Western Ghats and its extensive dam network, noting that pumped storage plays a crucial role in stabilising the grid amid the variability of renewable energy sources.
