Maharashtra's ₹500 Crore Push for Water Recycling and Reuse

The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved a new policy to promote a circular economy through the treatment and reuse of sewage and wastewater across 424 urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state.

To support implementation, the state government has allocated ₹500 crore to the Urban Development Department. With 48% of Maharashtra's population living in urban areas and water demand on the rise, the policy aims to enable sustainable wastewater management and encourage non-potable reuse in sectors such as industry, thermal power, urban services, and agriculture.

Implementation will be overseen by district-level joint monitoring committees, chaired by district collectors or municipal commissioners, while a state-level steering committee led by the Chief Secretary will provide overall policy guidance.

The policy applies to major water users, local bodies, implementation agencies, and citizens, and is designed to reduce waste, extend the lifespan of resources, and advance recycling and reuse practices in alignment with circular economy principles.
